6th Sejong Institute-The Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) Joint Meeting

On Novermber 13 and 14, Sejong Institute visited three research institutions based in Tokyo, Japan, and held the 6th Sejong Institute–The Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) Joint Meeting. The meetings reviewed the current state and challenges of Republic of Korea United States Japan cooperation, assessed foreign policy trends in Korea and Japan in light of recent political developments, and explored changes in the regional security environment and key tasks for future trilateral cooperation.

On November 13,  a strategic dialogue was held between Sejong Institute and JIIA. Discussions focused on the status and challenges of ROK-U.S.-Japan cooperation, ROK-Japan relations, domestic political conditions, and foreign policy trends in each country. Key remarks were delivered by Yoshida Tomoyuki, President of JIIA, Yong Joon Lee, Chairman of Sejong Institute, and Hyun-Wook Kim, President of Sejong Institute. The session concluded with an open discussion involving all participants, allowing for an exchange of views on the issues raised.

On November 14, Sejong Insitute and National Institute for Defense Studies (NDS) under Japan’s Ministry of Defense held a meeting. Participants discussed Japan’s National Defense Strategy and the U.S.-Japan alliance, ROK-U.S. alliance, strategic flexibility, and regional linkages, Japan’s military command structure reform and coordination with United States Forces, as well as debates on ROK-Japan SSN (nuclear-powered submarine) issues and technology sharing.

On November 14, Sejong Institute held a meeting with The Canon Institute for Global Studies (CIGS).  The discussion addressed changes in policy elites and institutional reforms following the Takaichi Sanae administration, ROK-Japan relations marked by ongoing frictions despite improvement efforts, and areas of potential cooperation alongside competitive dynamics.
