The Sejong Foundation, with the support of national leaders in politics and business, was founded in the aftermath of the Rangoon Incident in December 1983.
The founders firmly believed that there was a need for an independent research institute which would specialize issues concerning national security and inter-Korean relations. The founders¡¯ vision became a reality on November 23, 1983, with the formal inauguration of what is now the Sejong Foundation and its research arm called the Sejong Institute.
The Sejong Foundation, which began to offer fellowship program in 1985 and initiated its research projects in January 1986, has long provided financial support for bereaved families of the victims of the Rangoon Incident. The name of the foundation was changed to ¡®The Sejong Foundation¡¯ in September of 1996. The Foundation is committed to realizing its founding goals of pursuing national social development by providing strategic insight and policy solutions on issues concerning national security, inter-Korean relations, and foreign affairs. The Foundation supports the activities conducted by the Institute through its research projects, education, and training programs, including the Sejong Globalization Training Program.
